(1) Superb lake pattern in larger sizes --especially in the Northwest-- where the common coloration of midges are black and red. Brown is another great color. I have had success on rivers and creeks in small sizes.
(2) Can be tied with several different materials. Larger flies are usually tied/wrapped with a heavy material such as Scud Back for the body on longer hook shanks Smaller flies ( < size 16) can be tied with thread, Frostbite or Body Quill for the body on curved scud style hooks. (3) The original is tied with a white metal bead.
(4) A coating of UV resin is optional, but adds another dimension to the fly while protecting it.
