Yong Special - #1 of 150

I've set a new goal of tying 150 midge patterns and post them here on the blog.  Should be an easy feat as midges, for the most part, are very simple to tie.  However, I intend to include other patterns along the way to break the monotony.

To kick this endeavor off I am starting with a Yong Special.  This unassuming larva pattern doesn't use normal fly tying thread.  Rather it uses sewing thread, 100-percent polyester, from Coats and Clark for the body.  Then the pattern finished with 14/0 Veevus for the head.

Before you start tying the Thread Midge will need to transfer the sewing thread to a empty spool once containing fly tying thread.  The 250-yard spool Coats and Clark will not fit any bobbin I am aware of.  However the task is rather simple and can be done with a drill in a matter of a minute or two.  If this is not possible the body can be tied "in hand."

Materials

Hook:   Daiichi 1270 or TMC 200 Sizes 18 to 22 (Size 20 Daiichi is pictured)
Thread:  14/0 Veevus, black
Body:  Coats and Clark, Dual Duty XP, # 520 (Dark Silver).   There are quite a few different colors of Coats and Clark you could utilize for your midge arsenal!

Tying Steps

1.  Debarb the hook by utilizing the jaws of your vise to smash the barb.
2.  Cord the thread tightly and then make your initial securing/starting wraps about a half eye length behind the eye.  Do not cut tag end.
3.  Once you have advanced the wraps to approximately the 3/4 mark the tag end can be removed.  This position aids in forming the taper.  Continue to advance the thread to a position just behind the barb area.  Ensure the thread remains tightly corded and return to the eye area.  DO NOT CLIP the fuzzy stuff..  The pattern(s) fish better with time.  The fuzzier the better!
4.  At this time start your black thread just behind the eye and make securing wraps over the Coats and Clark.  Form a nice tapered head.
5.  Apply an UV resin, Sally Hansen's or head cement.
